CROWDFUNDING PROJECT
May 14th- June 28th, 2013
Help Protect Bernini's Masterpiece: The Bust of Francesco I d'Este
Last May, the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy was hit by a devastating earthquake. The damage to the region’s artistic and cultural institutions was extensive, and many have yet to reopen to the public. The Galleria Estense in Modena, which houses an incredible collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, is one such institution. The gallery cannot reopen until certain protective measures are put in place, in particular, an anti-seismic pedestal that will cost € 60,000 (approximately $ 80,000) in order to safeguard its most precious masterpiece: the 17th century bust of Francesco I d’Este, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
This fundraising initiative has been organized in the U.S. by Friends of FAI, at the request of FAI-Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which has committed to support this project. We hope to raise $60,000 for the project, but we cannot do it alone. We hope you will contribute to this important cause, and enable the public to once again enjoy this beautiful and significant work of art.

The project has been organized in conjunction with "The Year of Italian Culture in the United States."

FILM SCREENING
The Courthouse Theater, New York
32 Second Avenue
Wednesday, April 17th at 6pm
The Peasant and the Priest
Friends of FAI is delighted to invite you to a screening of “The Peasant and the Priest,” a documentary by Esther Podemski, presented by New Filmmakers Festival & the Anthology Film Archives. The Peasant and the Priest addresses two aspects of globalization: landscape change and human trafficking as encountered by two italian men in their eighties. Sergio, a peasant, still works in the ancient olive groves; Father Oreste, a priest, ministers to women caught in global sexual slavery. The point of departure for exploring these two parallel lives is a 14th century fresco: The Allegory of Good and Bad Government, by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Admission is $6.00. Tickets may be purchased at the door and will entitle you to view all the films showing that evening.

THE PRINCE & I: Following the Italian Grand Tour of Crown Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony
Curator and scholar Maureen Cassidy-Geiger has twice driven the 3000-kilometer Grand Tour itinerary of this remarkable teenage heir to the throne, using his handwritten travel diaries from 1738-1740 as her guidebook. His route took her from Dresden to Naples via Palmanova, Loreto and Bologna, bypassing Venice and Rome. After a cure on Ischia, and a year in Rome, the prince spent four weeks touring Tuscany, Lombardy and the Veneto before arriving at Ca'Foscari in Venice for Christmas and carnival. The boy's rank guaranteed him first-class accommodations wherever possible, and Professor Cassidy-Geiger has identified those which exist, and will speak about issues of access and preservation.

RESTORATION PROJECT
April 2011
Casa e Torre Campatelli
The hilltop town of San Gimignano cuts a striking profile against the Tuscan countryside thanks to prominence of its 13 Medieval Towers. The Campatelli Palace and Tower is a prime example of these iconic structures, and will be only the second of its kind open to the public in San Gimignano. Not only is the property fascinating from an architectural standpoint, but it also provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Tuscan upper classes of the 19th and 20th centuries.
